Storm Water Management
and Road Tunnel (Smart)
Description of Project This innovative project is part of the flood mitigation programme for the city of Kuala Lumpur and its suburbs. Commissioned by the Department of Irrigation & Drainage Malaysia and undertaken by MMC Engineering and Gamuda Bhd on a BOT contract, the project aims to restore the 1 in 100 year flood protection for the city. The project involves the construction of 11.5 km long 12 m diameter tunnel designed to divert 280 m3 of floodwater away from the city. The tunnel also incorporates a 3km long double-deck motorway making it the first of its kind in the world. In addition to these, the project also entails the construction of two storage reservoirs of 600,000 m3 and 1,400,000 m3 respectively. ERE was engaged by Gamuda Bhd to undertake the environmental impact assessment for the Project. Together with engineers and planers from MMC Engineering and Gamuda, we identified all the major environmental issues and formulated management plans to minimize the impacts. The key issues analyzed include noise from construction works, disposal of excess material, and safety in the tunnel. The Government of Malaysia approved the environmental impact assessment report in October 2002. |
